Protecting the Environment
At Palewell Press, we’re committed to environmental responsibility at every stage of our publishing process. We are a signatory to the Publishing Declares pledge, which begins: “Protect nature and biodiversity, working with supply chain partners that are resource efficient, use sustainable materials and processes wherever possible in the content we produce, and constantly innovating to make use of new and recycled materials.”
The paper used in Palewell Press books is either recycled or is FSC–certified as coming from sustainably-managed forests. The FSC logo shows the paper meets the strict environmental and social standards which support responsible forestry practises. This assures our readers that every book they enjoy contributes to a healthier planet.
From 2026, wherever possible, we will choose hydro-soy ink for our books. This plant-based alternative to petroleum ink is made primarily from soybeans and water which makes it biodegradable, renewable and non-toxic. Hydro-soy ink also produces bright, long-lasting colours.
Within Europe, we minimise waste through print-on-demand - only printing physical books as required. For customers elsewhere, we want to avoid our books accumulating air-miles. From 2026 onwards, all our paperbacks and pamphlets will also be available as eBooks. In countries where a paperback can’t be printed locally, customers will be able to download the eBook.
Our commitment to sustainable publishing includes a book's "end-of-life." We encourage customers who no longer wish to keep one of our books to pass it on to another person or an organisation. By doing so, they help us continue reducing waste and supporting a circular economy. Details of organisations that can help people recycle books are shown in the "Passing Books On" tab on our Get Involved page.
